I've had three solo shows in Tokyo. All three featured my ballpoint pen drawings. Each show was progressively more successful, meaning more people came out to see the work, and more people left with my art. Preparing for each show was a large project in itself, as big as any drawing, with the framing and promotion also falling into my hands. A labor of love, for sure •
Tokyo Solo 3 (March 24–26, 2023)
I loved this exhibition because, although it rained the entire time, everyone who came out seemed to focus on the art — really looking at it — more than at the previous two Tokyo Solos. A surprising number of people came out in spite of the weather. I sold more this time than at the previous shows as well. Not much more, and little by little is the name of this game. As before, we rented this space (here, a little space in Nakameguro), but it felt like I was starting to get a foothold in the art world. We’re still seeking a gallery or representation, and we haven’t put too much effort into that •
Tokyo Solo 2 (January 25–30, 2022)
We planned to have another show in the same year as our first effort (Tokyo Solo 1, 2018), but it wasn’t until this year that Tokyo Solo 2 was held. Though the pandemic was — is — still in full swing, many people came out, wearing masks and keeping as much distance as possible, including a few buyers! Eleven of the nineteen pieces shown were new, along with a newer, better framing approach. The gallery was slightly bigger than the one for Solo 1 and a bit easier to find, but all in all it was a similar type of show — i.e., great! We do hope the next show (Tokyo Solo 3) will happen sooner than Solo 2 did, and we’re doing what we can to make that happen. As with Solo 1, we very much appreciate all those who came out to support the art — thank you very much indeed •
Tokyo Solo 1 (May 5–12, 2018)
This was a great first experience of having a solo show at a gallery in Tokyo. We learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. Many people came out during the week, and many questions were asked about my process and approach. I sold enough to cover the cost of the show, which is more than I could ask for. To all who came out, thank you very much. We’re hoping to do it again this year at another gallery yet to be determined. Until then I’ll be busy creating something •
